The Tiggo 9 is Chery's flagship in South Africa — a seven-seat SUV that sits above the Tiggo 8 Pro Max on size, power and price, and squares up to the Mahindra XUV700, Kia Sorento and Toyota Fortuner rather than the compact crowd. It comes two ways: the 2.0T petrol we have three of, and the CSH plug-in hybrid, which is the same idea as the Tiggo 7 Hybrid scaled up. If seven seats are not a must, the Tiggo Cross Lit and Chery Q sit well below it on price.

How much does the Chery Tiggo 9 cost in South Africa?

On our floor right now: R599 900 for a 2.0T Pinnacle petrol, with two more 2.0T Pinnacles at R689 900, and one R739 900 CSH plug-in hybrid demo with about 900 km on it. Those are our actual selling prices, VAT included, licensing and registration excluded.

Prices are what we sell at, VAT included, licensing and registration excluded. Our three petrol units are priced R599 900, R689 900 and R689 900 — the R599 900 car is the pick if the budget is tight. Chery's national list prices as of September 2026 are R689 900 for the 2.0T Pinnacle, R779 900 for the 2.0T Vanguard AWD, R839 900 for the CSH Pinnacle and R989 900 for the CSH Vanguard AWD (chery.co.za and cars.co.za, opened 9 September 2026). What would the monthly instalment be on a Tiggo 9?

About R10 696 a month on the R599 900 2.0T, roughly R12 301 on a R689 900 one, and around R13 192 on the R739 900 CSH hybrid demo. Those are estimates on a 10% deposit over 72 months at 12.5% with no balloon — the same assumption set we use on every model page so the numbers stay comparable.

A balloon payment would drop those figures, but you would owe a lump sum at the end. The rate a bank actually gives you depends on your credit profile and how much deposit or trade-in you put down. Send your details on the finance page and we submit to the major South African banks and come back with a real number.

What engine and fuel economy does the Tiggo 9 2.0T have?

The three petrol units we stock are the 2.0T Pinnacle: a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol (Chery calls it the 2.0 TGDI) making 187 kW and 390 N·m, driving the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Chery claims 7.9 L/100 km for this front-wheel-drive version; expect closer to 9–10 L/100 km in real Gauteng traffic with a full load.

Specs sourced from chery.co.za, cars.co.za, CAR magazine and Group1 Chery, all opened 9 September 2026. Figures are Chery's claims; independent 0–100 and fuel-tank figures were not consistently published and are left off rather than guessed.

Chery Tiggo 9 comparison card: 2.0T petrol makes 187 kW and 390 Nm with 7.9 L per 100km and seven seats; CSH hybrid makes 280 kW and 610 Nm with 1.5 L per 100km and a 90 km electric range; both front-wheel drive; from R599 900 in stock in Johannesburg

Is the Tiggo 9 CSH a plug-in, and what is the electric range?

Yes — the CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) is a proper plug-in hybrid. A 1.5-litre turbopetrol works with an electric motor for 280 kW and 610 N·m combined in the front-wheel-drive Pinnacle we have, fed by an 18.3 kWh battery that Chery says is good for about 90 km of electric-only running.

You can plug it in overnight and do the daily commute on electricity, or never plug it in at all and it simply runs as a normal hybrid, topping the battery up as you drive. Chery quotes roughly 1 400 km of combined range on a full tank and a full charge, with 1.5 L/100 km on the claimed cycle when the battery is charged and about 5.5 L/100 km once it is depleted.

The flagship CSH Vanguard AWD adds two more motors for 455 kW / 920 N·m and a 34.4 kWh battery (160 km electric range), but that is not the variant on our floor. Our demo is the 280 kW CSH Pinnacle. Charging times were not published by Chery SA at the time of writing — ask and we will get the figure for the specific unit.

What warranty and service plan does Chery give on the Tiggo 9?

On the Tiggo 9 specifically: a 7-year / 200 000 km vehicle warranty, the 10-year / 1 000 000 km engine warranty tied to the first owner, and a 7-year / 90 000 km service plan, per Group1 Chery and cars.co.za. The CSH hybrid adds a 10-year / unlimited km high-voltage battery warranty.

Confirm the exact cover in writing

Chery South Africa's own baseline warranty page still lists 5 years / 150 000 km as the standard factory warranty, with the million-kilometre engine cover framed as a loyalty extension. The 7-year figure is what Chery and its dealers quote for the Tiggo 9, but the fine print can differ by unit and promotion. Before you sign, get the cover confirmed in writing for the specific VIN — we will help you request it.

Should you buy the Tiggo 9, or is the Tiggo 8 enough?

Straight answer: buy the Tiggo 9 if you genuinely need a usable third row and want the bigger engine and the plusher cabin. If the third row is a once-a-year thing, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max does most of the same job for meaningfully less money.

The Tiggo 9 is longer, wider and more powerful than the Tiggo 8, with 187 kW against the Tiggo 8's 1.6T, and its third row is sized for adults on shorter trips rather than just kids. The CSH hybrid is the one to look at if you do a fixed daily commute you could cover on electricity — the maths only works if you actually plug it in.

Names to clear up: the Tiggo 9 CSH and Tiggo 9 PHEV are the same plug-in hybrid car. Black Badge is a dark-trim appearance pack, not a bigger engine or a separate model. The Tiggo 9L and Tiggo 9X are larger Chery SUVs sold in other markets, not in South Africa.

Buying a Chery Tiggo 9 from Tembani Sales

A flagship Chinese-brand SUV raises the same three questions every time: is the price real, who backs the warranty, and what happens if something goes wrong. You get a straight answer to all three from Tembani himself — not a junior on a sales floor. We have traded in Johannesburg since 2019.

Can I trade my current car in against a Chery Tiggo 9?

Yes. Send us your car's details and we'll give you a straight trade-in figure, usually the same day, and set it against the Tiggo 9 so you can see the real difference to pay. There's no charge and no obligation, and a trade-in works as your deposit.
